 Description:

The Certificate in University Teaching is offered to all faculty, part-time/sessional instructors, and staff who are interested in developing their teaching practice and engaging in a community of practice along with their peers in the UOIT teaching community. The richness of the program is in shared experiences and the new connections that are formed.

The certificate program consists of 14 modules, which include an examination of learning theories, principles of instructional design and Universal Design for Learning, and an exploration into learning technology. Participants will also have the opportunity to facilitate modules with their peers. A presentation on personal teaching philosophies and teaching best practices will conclude the program. There are two in-person modules, at the beginning and at the end of the program. The remaining 12 modules are delivered online through Adobe Connect (for synchronous modules) and Blackboard (for asynchronous modules). Each of the 14 modules takes approximately 3 hours to complete.

 Program LearnIng Outcomes:

On the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Engage in a community of practice through discussion and reflection to critically evaluate teaching practices and classroom strategies.
  2. Use evidence-based teaching practices to design teaching and learning activities that foster student engagement (active learning, UDL, authentic assessment, etc.).
  3. Discuss and apply principles of instructional design including constructive alignment, strategies to promote significant learning and relevant assessment (methods/activities/techniques).
  4. Make informed choices regarding the use of various learning technologies in your teaching practice.
  5. Articulate a personal teaching philosophy based on your investigations and analyses of teaching and learning.

 ReQuirements:

  1. Attendance/participation in 10/14 modules. Includes completion of ‘exit ticket’ for each completed module.
  2. Classroom observation by Teaching and Learning Centre Representative
  3. Peer observation outside of your Faculty area (completed between January and end of February).
  4. Teaching Philosophy Presentation.
  5. Adobe Connect and In Person sessions will take place on Mondays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
